If you have been reading this blog for awhile, you know that my all-time, absolutely true, most favorite flower in my garden is the tree peony. I wait all year for these to bloom (I have two), and some years their blooms are very fleeting. A big storm can destroy it in a day. This luscious pink one started to bloom late last week, right before I went out of town. When I came back on Sunday, it was in full bloom, but then the rain of the past few days has beaten it down. I keep trying to take photos, but the blooms are so heavy, especially with the rain, that they are drooping and facing downward. It makes me think about all the reasons that we garden--for the beauty of such short-lived blooms?
And did you know that China sent 300 tree peonies to the Brooklyn Botanic Garden after September 11 "to bring peace of mind to the people of the United States."
Maybe you should use umbrellas on the tree peonies :)
